The Meltaway Incident (a.k.a. My Dad Is Crazy)

The Meltaway Incident (a.k.a. My Dad Is Crazy)

The summer after I started dating my husband, my family invited him to vacation with us on Cape Cod.

One morning, we went to our favorite Cape Cod restaurant and enjoyed one of our favorite Cape Cod pastries: a Meltaway Danish.

Here’s the speech my sister gave at my wedding about how what happened next convinced her that Paul was the man for me:

“For anyone who doesn’t know me, I’ve known Meghann for my whole life and very close to her whole life. So originally I thought, ‘Well, I have a lot of material to work with here,’ but then I realized that I’d embarrassed her enough last weekend at the bachelorette party, and that I didn’t need to do it again tonight.

“So I’m going to tell a story about the moment I knew that Paul was the right guy for my sister.

“The first time I really spent any significant time with Paul was on Cape Cod a couple of years ago. He seemed very nice, and one morning we all went out for breakfast. We went out to a place called Bonatt’s. They give a pastry called a meltaway to each table. It’s free—it’s like dinner rolls only it’s for breakfast.

“We had our meltaway, and it was delicious. Then my dad decided he wanted the half-eaten meltaway off the next table over, where the people had just gotten up and left.

“So my dad turns to my brother and says, ‘Michael, get that pastry for me.’ And my brother says, ‘No way! I’m not going to take food off someone else’s table and eat it.’

“Never one to give up easily, my dad turns to Paul and says, ‘Paul, will you get the pastry for me?’

Paul hesitates for only a split second before replying, ‘Uh, uh, sure.’ Then he leans back, makes a big calamity with the plates, gets the pastry… and then my dad ate it.

“So that was the moment I realized: this guy will do anything for my sister.

“I just wanted to say that I have never seen Meghann happier than she’s been since the night she met Paul. And today she looks so beautiful and so elegant and she’s just such a fantastic person, and I couldn’t ask for a better sister. We’ve had so many great times together, and I know that going forward this is going to be another great chapter in her life—and in all our lives—to have Paul and the rest of the Whistlers as part of our circle.

“So I will also raise my glass to the new Mr. and Mrs. Whistler and wish them all the best happiness and a great honeymoon!”
